‘Tis the Season for Healing, Restoring - Go With Your Gut

In September of 2018 at the Churchtown Dairy in Hudson, NY Mark McAfee, Founder and Chairman of Raw Milk Institute, started a presentation by reminding his audience about the important connection between the soil and the gut. The entire presentation is rich with valuable information but that initial sentiment cannot be overlooked especially by those preparing to shift their lifestyle in a healthier direction.

Many diet fads place focus on calorie counting and other elements that strictly impact your appearance. This is an over-materialized concept that was created not in the best interest of the human race but for the brands and individuals who profit off those trends, as well as big pharmaceutical companies who “come to your rescue” once you’ve become sick from eating those “healthy diet foods”.

The crazy part? Being healthy is easier than counting calories and buying flavorless, over-processed foods. You can simply focus on the soil. Here’s why:

As a general rule of thumb, all the moving parts of being healthy stem from your gut, thanks to its relationship with your brain.

The gut impacts your physical AND mental health. Yes, your gut and brain are connected both physically and bio-chemically. We can think of the physical connection, known as the vagus nerve, as something tangible that can actually be touched. The chemical connection however is through neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters are produced primarily in the brain but there are also a fair amount produced by the gut and the trillions of microbes living there.

They control feelings and emotions like happiness and fear. But what’s directing those neurotransmitters? Maintaining a healthy balance of neurotransmitters includes ensuring they have sufficient energy.

Energy comes from real food. And real food comes from healthy soil.

It’s as simple as that folks. Well, of course it’s a bit more involved when you get into the medical terminology but we think the craziest part is just that - this is science. Some parts of society get a kick out of labeling it at “old school” or “looney hippy business” or “crunchy” . The terms and jokes go on really but at the end of the day it is just true scientific health and a simple cycle - soil feeds plants and animals, humans consume plants and animals, that consumption gives critical parts of your body energy, that energy allows you to promote positive mental and physical health.

So if you’re finding life is slowing down a bit as we enter fall and prepare to segue into winter, and you want to use the newfound time wisely, work on your health.

Make sure real food from healthy soil is not just part of that work, it’s the main focus.

Then let us know how you feel! As always, wishing you many blessings in good health!
